What is Shop Floor Time & Attendance (Barcoded Labor)?

Barcoded labor capture that unifies job time, attendance/payroll hours, and employee management so production actuals and time-clock data live in one Business Central system. Built, installed as a per-tenant extension, and supported by ECOSIRE. Built to order by ECOSIRE for Dynamics 365 BC (build-to-order) — indicative price from $999.00 USD; request a quote for a scoped proposal.

Key Features

Barcoded clock-in/out for both attendance and specific production jobs from a wedge scanner, tablet kiosk, or hardware terminal, resolving badge and job barcodes against custom AL master tables
Direct vs. indirect labor split — direct time posts to a Production Order routing operation; indirect time (setup, maintenance, cleaning, training) books to configurable indirect cost categories
Configurable pay-rule engine: overtime thresholds (daily/weekly), shift differentials, and automatic paid/unpaid break deduction applied at posting time
Daily timecard with supervisor approval and edit workflow built on Business Central's native approval engine, with full edit audit trail (who changed what, when, and why)
Labor cost feedback to production order costing via event subscribers on the Capacity Ledger Entry / Item Ledger posting flow — actual labor cost lands on the order without re-keying
Custom Labor Entry table with table and page extensions on Employee, Resource, and Production Order Routing Line so labor data lives natively inside Business Central
Permission sets scoped for operators (scan only), supervisors (approve/edit), and payroll/admin (export and configure), assignable from the standard User Card
Job queue entries for nightly rollup of raw scans into approved timecards, exception flagging (missed punches, overlapping jobs), and stale open-punch auto-close
OData V4 / Business Central REST API endpoints exposing labor entries and timecards for kiosk front-ends, Power BI, or Dataverse / Power Platform integration
Exception dashboard: missing clock-outs, overlapping job punches, attendance-vs-job hour variances, and unapproved timecards surfaced as Business Central role-center cues
Payroll export of approved attendance hours (CSV/OData) mapped to your payroll provider's import format
Built and installed as a per-tenant extension on your own tenant (sandbox-validated, then production), versioned and upgrade-tested against Business Central platform updates

About this Product

Labor-intensive manufacturers usually run two disconnected worlds: production output tracked in Business Central, and time clocks tracked in a separate punch system or spreadsheets. Reconciling the two — what an operator actually worked versus what they were paid for — eats supervisor hours and corrupts your real production cost.

Shop Floor Time & Attendance (Barcoded Labor) is a per-tenant AL extension that ECOSIRE builds, installs, and supports directly on your Business Central environment. Operators badge in and out against work badges and job barcodes from a shop-floor terminal, tablet, or wedge scanner. Every scan resolves through a custom Labor Entry table that knows whether time is direct (booked to a Production Order routing line / operation) or indirect (setup, maintenance, cleaning, meetings), and applies your pay rules — shift differentials, overtime thresholds, and break deductions.

Direct labor flows into the production order via event subscribers on Manufacturing capacity ledger and item ledger posting, so your Cost is Right without re-keying. Attendance hours roll up into a daily timecard your supervisors review, edit, and approve through a Business Central approval workflow before they export to payroll.

Because this is a custom build, the data model and pay rules are shaped to your shifts, union or wage agreements, and cost-center structure — not a generic AppSource template you bend to fit. We deliver permission sets, a job queue for nightly rollups, and OData/API endpoints so a kiosk app, Power BI, or a Power Platform / Dataverse flow can read and write labor data.

This is not an instant AppSource download. ECOSIRE scopes, builds, deploys the extension to your tenant (sandbox first, then production), trains your team, and supports it under an agreement.

What you get

  • A per-tenant Business Central AL extension (.app) built to your shift, pay-rule, and cost-center requirements, deployed to your sandbox then production environment
  • Custom Labor Entry data model plus table/page extensions on Employee, Resource, and Production Order Routing Line
  • Configured pay-rule, overtime, shift-differential, and break-deduction logic matching your wage/union agreements
  • Supervisor approval and edit workflow wired into the native Business Central approval engine with audit logging
  • Event-subscriber integration posting actual direct labor cost back to production order / capacity ledger costing
  • Permission sets for operator, supervisor, and payroll/admin roles, plus a configured job queue for nightly rollups and exception handling
  • OData/REST API endpoints and a payroll-export mapping for your downstream HR/payroll system
  • Source AL, deployment notes, an admin configuration guide, and a supervisor/operator how-to, plus handover training and a post-go-live support window

Who this is for

HR / Operations Lead at a labor-intensive manufacturer

Owns both attendance accuracy and shop-floor productivity. Needs one source of truth where the hours people are paid for reconcile against the jobs they actually worked, without chasing supervisors for spreadsheets.

Production / Plant Supervisor

Approves daily timecards, corrects missed punches, and splits indirect time. Wants a fast scan-and-approve flow inside Business Central instead of re-keying a separate time clock into the ERP.

Cost Accountant / Controller

Relies on accurate actual labor cost on each production order to trust margins. Needs operator labor to flow into capacity and item ledger costing automatically rather than as an estimated standard.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shop Floor Time & Attendance

How long until it's live on our Business Central environment?

After a scoping call to confirm your shifts, pay rules, cost centers, and barcode hardware, a typical build runs about one working week. We develop and validate the extension in your sandbox first, walk you through it, then deploy to production on a scheduled cutover. Complex union pay rules or multiple plants can extend that — we give you a firm timeline in writing after scoping, not a generic promise.

Is this an AppSource app I can just download and install?

No. This is a build-to-order, per-tenant extension. ECOSIRE builds it specifically for your tenant and installs it directly via the Business Central extension management / admin center — there is no public AppSource listing to self-install. That's deliberate: the pay-rule and cost-center logic is tailored to your operation rather than a one-size-fits-all template you'd have to configure around.

What happens when Microsoft ships a Business Central update?

Your support agreement covers compatibility. Business Central pushes major platform updates twice a year; we test the extension against the upcoming release in a sandbox and ship any required fixes so your labor capture keeps working through the upgrade. Ongoing support also covers bug fixes and small configuration changes (new shift, changed overtime rule) under the agreed terms.

Does this replace our payroll system?

No — it feeds it. The extension captures and approves attendance and job hours inside Business Central, then exports approved hours in your payroll provider's import format (or via OData for an integration). Payroll calculation, tax, and pay runs stay in your existing payroll system; this removes the manual re-keying and reconciliation between the time clock and production data.

What barcode hardware and scanning setups does it support?

Anything that can present a badge or job number as input: USB/Bluetooth wedge scanners into a kiosk page, rugged tablets running the Business Central web client, or a custom kiosk front-end talking to our OData/REST endpoints. We confirm your hardware during scoping and shape the scan flow to it — we don't lock you into one vendor's terminal.
