Warehouse Mobile Scanning App — Lightweight barcode scanning for receipt, picking, counting and movement in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, for sites running basic warehousing

What we build

  • Browser-based handheld screens with keyboard-wedge scan input, sized for small displays and hardware scan triggers, running on rugged Android, Windows handhelds, phones or tablets
  • Custom services on the standard F&O service framework, authenticated per user so security roles, DataArea context and posting validation all apply — no shadow database
  • Purchase order receiving with over- and under-delivery tolerance handling and product receipt posting against the order line
  • Batch and serial capture at the point of scan, validated against item tracking setup, including expiry date capture for batch-controlled items
  • Sales order and transfer order pick queue filtered by warehouse, with location scan, item scan, quantity confirmation and picking list registration posting
  • Short-pick capture with reason codes surfaced immediately to the office instead of silent skips
  • Counting journal creation and posting from the device — full location count, spot count and pushed cycle-count lists
  • Supervisor override code required for count variances above a configurable threshold, with counter, timestamp and device recorded per line
  • Inventory movement journal posting for location-to-location moves, plus transfer order shipment and receipt confirmation on both ends
  • Offline input buffering with idempotent submission keys so a reconnect retry cannot double-post a transaction
  • Label printing for received goods and licence plates triggered from the device through your existing print infrastructure
  • Supervisor workspace in F&O plus data entities over OData for device activity, open picks, short-pick reasons and count variances in Power BI

Sobre este producto

The problem

Advanced warehouse management in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management is powerful, and for many sites it is more than the operation needs. Enabling WHS-managed items means location directives, work templates, wave processing, work pools and a reservation hierarchy — a configuration project in itself. Plenty of warehouses run perfectly well on basic warehousing with inventory journals, arrival overviews and picking lists.

But those sites still have people walking the floor with printed pick lists, keying item numbers into a desktop client at the end of an aisle, and discovering short picks at the packing bench. Counts are done on paper and typed in the next day. Nothing is confirmed at the moment it physically happens, so stock accuracy drifts and the ledger is always slightly behind the shelf.

The standard Warehouse Management mobile app only serves WHS-enabled warehouses. If you are on basic warehousing, there is no handheld path in the box.

What ECOSIRE builds

We build a scanning application that posts against the standard inventory transaction model — purchase order receipt, sales order picking and packing slip, inventory movement, transfer order, and counting journals — so a site gets handheld accuracy without a WHS implementation.

Device-agnostic front end

The operator interface is a browser-based screen designed for a small display and a hardware scan trigger: large targets, one decision per screen, keyboard wedge input so any scanner that emits a scan-and-enter works. It runs on rugged Android or Windows handhelds and on a phone or tablet. Where your operation prefers it, we can instead build the front end as a Power Apps canvas app over the same service layer.

F&O service layer, not a copy of your data

Every screen calls a custom service built on the standard F&O service framework, authenticated as a real user so all standard security, DataArea context and posting validation apply. There is no shadow database and no nightly sync: a receipt posted on the handheld is a posted F&O transaction the moment the operator confirms it, with the correct LedgerDimension and financial dimensions defaulted exactly as the desktop would.

Receiving

Scan a purchase order or an ASN reference, scan each item barcode, capture quantity, and post the product receipt against the order line. Over- and under-delivery tolerances are respected. Where items are batch or serial tracked, the tracking dimension is captured at the point of scan and validated against your item setup, including expiry date capture for batch-controlled items. Receipt to a specific location and licence plate is supported where your site uses them.

Picking and packing

A pick queue lists the sales orders and transfer orders released to the site, filtered by warehouse and optionally by a simple zone or route field. The operator scans the location, scans the item, confirms quantity, and the picking list registration posts. Short picks are recorded with a reason code instead of being silently skipped, so the office sees them immediately. Packing slip posting can be done from the device or left to the desk, depending on how you want to split responsibility.

Counting

Counting journals are created and posted from the handheld — a full count of a location, a spot count of a single item, or a cycle count driven by a list pushed from F&O. Variances above a configured threshold require a supervisor code before posting, and every count line records who counted, when, and from which device.

Movement and transfers

Item movement between locations posts an inventory movement journal. Transfer order shipment and receipt are supported so goods moving between your own warehouses are confirmed on both ends by scan rather than by email.

Working offline and under load

Handhelds lose signal. Screens buffer the operator's input locally and submit when connectivity returns, with the submission keyed so a retry cannot double-post. Long-running postings are handed to the batch framework rather than held on the device, and the operator sees a confirmation state rather than a spinner.

Labels and supervision

Label printing for received goods or licence plates is triggered from the device through your existing print infrastructure. A supervisor workspace in F&O shows device activity, open picks, short-pick reasons and count variances, and every transaction is exposed as a data entity over OData for Power BI reporting.

Who it is for

Sites running Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management on basic warehousing that want scan-level accuracy without committing to advanced WMS: single- or few-site distributors, manufacturers with a stores function, and organisations that plan to move to WHS later but need accuracy now. It is equally useful as a stepping stone — the flows and barcodes you standardise here carry over.

How delivery works

This app is built to order for your flows, your item tracking setup and your devices. Nothing is available as an immediate download.

1. Scoping call. We walk your physical process — how goods arrive, how picks are released, whether you use locations, batches, serials or licence plates — and confirm your device hardware, barcode symbologies, F&O version and platform update. 2. Fixed quote. A written scope naming the exact screens and flows included, the tracking dimensions handled, label output, and the supervisor workspace, with a fixed price and delivery date. 3. Build. Developed as X++ extensions in a dedicated model with no overlayering, plus the operator front end. Tested against your item and warehouse configuration. 4. Install in test. A deployable package for your LCS/sandbox pipeline, installed in UAT with your team. We run a real receipt, a real pick and a real count on your actual handheld hardware — not a simulator — before anyone signs off. 5. Production. After UAT sign-off, the package goes through your normal release pipeline. We support the first live shift on the floor. 6. Support. A defined support window covering defect fixes and assistance with the platform update following go-live.

What we do not claim

This is not advanced warehouse management. It does not provide location directives, work templates, wave processing or the WHS work engine, and it does not turn a basic warehousing site into a WHS site. If your operation genuinely needs directed work and wave processing, we will say so at scoping rather than sell you a lighter tool. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or certified by Microsoft or any hardware manufacturer.

How delivery works

  1. 1

    Scoping call

A short call to confirm the workflow, your platform version and where the integration boundaries sit.

  2. 2

    Fixed quote

You receive a written scope and a fixed price. Nothing is built until you approve it.

  3. 3

    Build and test

We develop against a copy of your configuration and test it there. Typically two to four weeks.

  4. 4

    Install and support

Instalamos en su instancia, le entregamos el código fuente e incluimos dos semanas de soporte tras la puesta en marcha. Los defectos en el código que entregamos se corrigen sin coste.

lo que obtienes

  • Deployable package (X++ extension model, no overlayering) built against your target F&O platform update for your LCS pipeline
  • Operator front end (browser-based, or a Power Apps canvas app where agreed at scoping) with source code in a Git repository you own
  • Installation and configuration in your test or UAT environment, validated on your actual handheld hardware
  • Configuration workbook covering warehouse and location setup, barcode symbologies, tolerance and variance thresholds, reason codes and label output
  • Operator quick-reference card per flow — receive, pick, count, move — written for floor use rather than for administrators
  • Training session for supervisors and a hands-on walkthrough for the floor team during the first live shift
  • Defined post-go-live support window for defect fixes and assistance with the next platform update

¿Para quién es esto?

Warehouse Manager

Runs a site on basic warehousing where picks are printed and confirmed hours later, so short picks only surface at packing. A handheld that registers the pick at the shelf and records short-pick reasons immediately removes the end-of-day surprises.

Inventory Controller

Counts on paper and keys the results in the following day, by which time stock has moved and variances are unexplainable. Counting journals posted from the device, with a supervisor threshold and a full audit of who counted what and when, make variances traceable.

Supply Chain IT Manager

Has been quoted a full advanced WMS implementation to solve what is really a data-capture problem. A scanning layer over the standard inventory transaction model delivers accuracy now and keeps the option of moving to WHS later without wasted work.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can I download and try it before buying?
No. This app is built to order after a scoping call and a fixed quote — there is no pre-built package and no trial. The typical build and delivery window is one working week depending on how many flows, tracking dimensions and sites are in scope. We can demonstrate the approach and screen design during scoping, but the app you receive is built for your configuration.
Which versions and editions of Dynamics 365 are supported?
Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management and Dynamics 365 Finance (Finance & Operations) on a supported platform update, cloud-hosted or on-premises. We build and test against the exact version and platform update you confirm at scoping. This is not a Business Central app and it does not run on Business Central.
Do I need advanced warehouse management enabled?
No, and that is the point. This works against basic warehousing using standard inventory journals, purchase order receipt, picking list registration and transfer orders. If your warehouse is already WHS-enabled, the standard Warehouse Management mobile app is usually the better fit, and we will tell you that at scoping rather than build something you do not need.
What scanner hardware does it work with?
Any device whose scanner emits scan-and-enter keyboard input — rugged Android and Windows handhelds, or a phone or tablet with a scanning sled or camera-based scanner. We confirm your specific hardware and barcode symbologies at scoping and test on your actual devices during UAT, not on a simulator.
What happens when a device loses Wi-Fi mid-transaction?
Operator input is buffered on the device and submitted when connectivity returns. Each submission carries an idempotency key, so a retry after a dropped connection cannot post the same receipt or pick twice. The operator sees an explicit pending or confirmed state rather than an ambiguous spinner.
Does it handle batch and serial numbers?
Yes, where your items are configured for them. Batch and serial are captured at the point of scan and validated against your item tracking setup, including expiry dates for batch-controlled items. The exact tracking dimensions in scope are confirmed and priced during scoping.
