Product Configurator & CPQ — A guided configure-price-quote layer for Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations that turns customer selections into validated configurations, generated BOMs and routes, and a priced quotation

What we build

  • Step-driven guided configuration form extending the standard F&O product configuration model experience
  • Draft configurations saved against the sales quotation line, resumable across sessions and cloneable into variants
  • Rule failures reported in business language with the specific constraint that eliminated each option
  • X++ rule layer for cross-line, customer-master-driven and inventory-driven constraints the expression engine cannot express
  • Data-driven rule maintenance in F&O forms with a supporting data entity, so rule changes need no code deployment
  • Automatic BOM version and route version generation through the standard F&O configuration generation path
  • Route operation and setup times driven from configured attributes rather than a flat per-item figure
  • Option surcharge and quantity-break pricing layered on trade agreements, with calculated cost taken from the generated BOM
  • Configurable margin floor with escalation routed through the standard F&O workflow framework
  • Multi-variant quotation output presenting the option tree and surcharges for good-better-best selling
  • Ledger dimension defaulting on generated lines following your existing account structure, scoped per legal entity
  • OData-exposed data entities for models, rules, option pricing and saved configurations for portal or CRM integration

Sobre este producto

The problem this solves

Make-to-order businesses lose money in the gap between what the salesperson promises and what the plant can actually build. Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations ships a constraint-based product configuration model that is genuinely capable — product configuration models, attributes, expression constraints, table constraints, and BOM and route generation on the sales line. In practice three things stop it carrying a real quoting process.

First, the configuration experience is a modal dialog aimed at a user who already knows the product. It is not a guided selling flow. A salesperson cannot see why an option disappeared, cannot compare two valid configurations, and cannot leave a half-finished configuration and come back to it.

Second, pricing. Configuration produces a BOM cost; it does not produce a commercial price. Option surcharges, volume breaks, margin floors, freight by configured weight or dimension, and per-customer discount logic all end up in a spreadsheet that lives on someone's laptop and disagrees with the ERP.

Third, the quote itself. What the customer receives is a standard sales quotation document that shows a configured item number and a price, with no breakdown of the choices that produced it and no way to present good-better-best alternatives.

ECOSIRE builds the layer that closes those three gaps, on top of your existing F&O configuration model rather than replacing it.

What ECOSIRE builds

Guided configuration experience

A step-driven configuration form built as an F&O form extension, sitting over your product configuration models. Options are presented in a sequence you define, with dependent choices revealed as earlier answers are given. When a rule eliminates an option, the interface says which rule did it rather than silently hiding the row.

Configurations are saved as drafts against the quotation line, so an unfinished configuration survives the salesperson closing the session. A configuration can be cloned to produce a variant for comparison.

Constraint and rule engine

Where the standard expression and table constraints on the product configuration model carry the logic, we use them. Where they cannot — cross-line rules, rules that need to read customer master data, rules driven by inventory or lead time — we add an X++ rule layer that evaluates alongside them and reports failures in business language. Rules are data-driven and maintained in F&O forms with a supporting data entity, so a product engineer changes a rule without a code deployment.

Automatic BOM and route generation

On confirmation, the configuration drives generation of the BOM and route through the standard F&O generation path, producing the configured item, BOM version and route version that production control expects. Operation times and setup can be driven from configured attributes so a longer assembly genuinely costs more minutes on the route rather than a flat figure.

Pricing and margin control

A pricing engine layered on the configuration result: option surcharges, quantity breaks, customer-specific and price-group logic through the standard trade agreement framework where it fits, and a configurable margin floor that blocks or routes for approval any quotation line below threshold. Calculated cost comes from the generated BOM so the margin figure is real rather than estimated.

Approval routing uses the standard F&O workflow framework, so escalation, delegation and the approval history behave exactly as every other workflow in your system.

Quotation output and downstream flow

A quotation document that presents the configuration as the customer chose it — the option tree, the selections, the surcharges, the total — rather than an opaque item number. Multiple variants can be presented on a single quotation for good-better-best selling. On acceptance, the standard quotation-to-sales-order conversion runs, carrying the configuration, BOM and route into the sales order and on into production.

All of it is multi-company aware: configuration models, rules and pricing are scoped per legal entity, with ledger dimension defaulting on the generated lines following your existing account structure.

Integration surface

Data entities for configuration models, rules, option pricing and saved configurations, exposed over OData so a partner portal, a Power Apps front end, or a CRM can read and write configurations. Where a customer-facing self-service configurator is wanted, we build that on the same entities — quoted as a separate scope item so you are not paying for it by default.

Delivered as extensions in a dedicated model. No overlayering.

Who this is for

Manufacturers and assemblers selling engineered or optioned products — machinery, furniture, cable assemblies, windows and doors, packaging, industrial equipment — where a quotation involves real choices and where the wrong configuration reaching production is expensive.

It assumes you have or are willing to build product configuration models in F&O. If your product variance is handled entirely through product dimensions and a finite variant list, standard F&O already covers you and we will tell you that during scoping instead of selling you a configurator.

How delivery works

Scoping call. We look at your actual products: how many models, how deep the option tree, where the rules currently live, how pricing is decided today, and who signs off a discount. We review your existing product configuration models if you have them.

Fixed quote. A written scope — models covered, rule count and complexity, pricing logic, approval routing, document output, integration points, F&O version targeted, explicit exclusions — at a fixed price. Work starts only on acceptance.

Build. Built in our F&O development environment against a copy of your configuration where available. Typical lead time is one working week from accepted quote, longer where the rule set is unusually deep.

Install in test. A deployable package into your sandbox via LCS. We load your configuration models, rules and pricing with your product and sales teams, and you quote real products against it in your own acceptance testing.

Production. Promotion to production through your normal release process after sandbox sign-off, with support through the go-live window and full source handover.

Support. A defect-support window from go-live covering behaviour that does not match the agreed specification. New models, new rules beyond the scoped count, and enhancements are quoted separately.

How delivery works

  1. 1

    Scoping call

A short call to confirm the workflow, your platform version and where the integration boundaries sit.

  2. 2

    Fixed quote

You receive a written scope and a fixed price. Nothing is built until you approve it.

  3. 3

    Build and test

We develop against a copy of your configuration and test it there. Typically two to four weeks.

  4. 4

    Install and support

Instalamos en su instancia, le entregamos el código fuente e incluimos dos semanas de soporte tras la puesta en marcha. Los defectos en el código que entregamos se corrigen sin coste.

lo que obtienes

  • Deployable package and full X++ source in a dedicated extension model with no overlayering
  • Sandbox installation via your LCS pipeline and promotion to production on your sign-off
  • Configuration of your product configuration models, rule set, option pricing and margin thresholds
  • Workflow configuration for margin-floor approval routing within the standard F&O workflow framework
  • Quotation document layout presenting the configured option tree, surcharges and variants
  • Technical documentation plus a product-engineer guide for maintaining rules and option pricing without a developer
  • Sales and product team training session and a defect-support window from production go-live

¿Para quién es esto?

Sales Engineer

Quotes optioned products from a spreadsheet because the standard configuration dialog assumes they already know every dependency, and periodically promises a combination the plant cannot build. The guided flow blocks invalid combinations at the point of selection and explains why, and produces a priced quotation the customer can actually read.

Product Engineer

Owns the option rules and currently files a change request every time a compatibility rule shifts, then waits for a deployment. Rules and option pricing are maintained as data in F&O forms with an import entity, so they change a rule in the morning and sales quotes against it the same day.

Commercial Director

Discovers thin-margin deals after the order is booked, because the configured cost was never compared to the quoted price until invoicing. The margin floor calculates against the generated BOM cost at quotation time and routes anything below threshold through a standard F&O workflow approval.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can I buy and download this today?
No. This is built to order. We scope your product models and rules, issue a fixed quote, and build it for your environment. Typical lead time is one working week from accepted quote to sandbox install; an unusually deep rule set or a large number of configuration models extends that, and we will say so in the quote rather than after.
Which Dynamics 365 versions and editions does this support?
Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management and Dynamics 365 Finance — the Finance & Operations apps — on currently supported service update levels in the cloud. We target and test against the specific update level named in your quote. It is not a Business Central product. On-premises F&O is possible but must be confirmed during scoping.
Does this replace the built-in constraint-based product configurator?
No, it builds on it. Your product configuration models, attributes, expression constraints and table constraints remain the source of truth and keep working. We add the guided selling experience, the rule types the expression engine cannot express, the commercial pricing layer, and the quotation output. If you have existing models, they are reused rather than rebuilt.
How do the generated BOM and route reach production?
Through the standard F&O path. Confirming a configuration generates the configured item, BOM version and route version using the native generation mechanism, and quotation-to-sales-order conversion carries them into the sales order. Production orders, master planning, costing and reporting then behave exactly as they do for any configured item today.
Can non-developers change the rules and option prices after go-live?
Yes, that is a design goal. Rules, option surcharges, quantity breaks and margin thresholds are data, maintained in F&O forms and importable through data entities in the data management framework. A code deployment is only needed if you want a genuinely new kind of rule — for example one that reads a data source we did not scope.
Can customers configure products themselves on a website or portal?
Not by default. The configurator runs inside F&O for your internal users. The data entities are exposed over OData specifically so a portal, Power Apps canvas app or CRM can drive the same rules, and we build that front end as a separate quoted scope item. We keep it optional so you are not paying for a portal you do not want.
