Advanced warehouse management in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management is powerful, and for many sites it is more than the operation needs. Enabling WHS-managed items means location directives, work templates, wave processing, work pools and a reservation hierarchy — a configuration project in itself. Plenty of warehouses run perfectly well on basic warehousing with inventory journals, arrival overviews and picking lists.
But those sites still have people walking the floor with printed pick lists, keying item numbers into a desktop client at the end of an aisle, and discovering short picks at the packing bench. Counts are done on paper and typed in the next day. Nothing is confirmed at the moment it physically happens, so stock accuracy drifts and the ledger is always slightly behind the shelf.
The standard Warehouse Management mobile app only serves WHS-enabled warehouses. If you are on basic warehousing, there is no handheld path in the box.
We build a scanning application that posts against the standard inventory transaction model — purchase order receipt, sales order picking and packing slip, inventory movement, transfer order, and counting journals — so a site gets handheld accuracy without a WHS implementation.
The operator interface is a browser-based screen designed for a small display and a hardware scan trigger: large targets, one decision per screen, keyboard wedge input so any scanner that emits a scan-and-enter works. It runs on rugged Android or Windows handhelds and on a phone or tablet. Where your operation prefers it, we can instead build the front end as a Power Apps canvas app over the same service layer.
Every screen calls a custom service built on the standard F&O service framework, authenticated as a real user so all standard security, DataArea context and posting validation apply. There is no shadow database and no nightly sync: a receipt posted on the handheld is a posted F&O transaction the moment the operator confirms it, with the correct LedgerDimension and financial dimensions defaulted exactly as the desktop would.
Scan a purchase order or an ASN reference, scan each item barcode, capture quantity, and post the product receipt against the order line. Over- and under-delivery tolerances are respected. Where items are batch or serial tracked, the tracking dimension is captured at the point of scan and validated against your item setup, including expiry date capture for batch-controlled items. Receipt to a specific location and licence plate is supported where your site uses them.
A pick queue lists the sales orders and transfer orders released to the site, filtered by warehouse and optionally by a simple zone or route field. The operator scans the location, scans the item, confirms quantity, and the picking list registration posts. Short picks are recorded with a reason code instead of being silently skipped, so the office sees them immediately. Packing slip posting can be done from the device or left to the desk, depending on how you want to split responsibility.
Counting journals are created and posted from the handheld — a full count of a location, a spot count of a single item, or a cycle count driven by a list pushed from F&O. Variances above a configured threshold require a supervisor code before posting, and every count line records who counted, when, and from which device.
Item movement between locations posts an inventory movement journal. Transfer order shipment and receipt are supported so goods moving between your own warehouses are confirmed on both ends by scan rather than by email.
Handhelds lose signal. Screens buffer the operator's input locally and submit when connectivity returns, with the submission keyed so a retry cannot double-post. Long-running postings are handed to the batch framework rather than held on the device, and the operator sees a confirmation state rather than a spinner.
Label printing for received goods or licence plates is triggered from the device through your existing print infrastructure. A supervisor workspace in F&O shows device activity, open picks, short-pick reasons and count variances, and every transaction is exposed as a data entity over OData for Power BI reporting.
Sites running Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management on basic warehousing that want scan-level accuracy without committing to advanced WMS: single- or few-site distributors, manufacturers with a stores function, and organisations that plan to move to WHS later but need accuracy now. It is equally useful as a stepping stone — the flows and barcodes you standardise here carry over.

Fixed quote. A written scope naming the exact screens and flows included, the tracking dimensions handled, label output, and the supervisor workspace, with a fixed price and delivery date. 3. Build. Developed as X++ extensions in a dedicated model with no overlayering, plus the operator front end. Tested against your item and warehouse configuration. 4. Install in test. A deployable package for your LCS/sandbox pipeline, installed in UAT with your team. We run a real receipt, a real pick and a real count on your actual handheld hardware — not a simulator — before anyone signs off. 5. Production. After UAT sign-off, the package goes through your normal release pipeline. We support the first live shift on the floor. 6. Support. A defined support window covering defect fixes and assistance with the platform update following go-live.
This is not advanced warehouse management. It does not provide location directives, work templates, wave processing or the WHS work engine, and it does not turn a basic warehousing site into a WHS site.
