AX 2012 to F&O Migration Toolkit — A build-to-order migration toolkit that moves an AX 2012 R2 or R3 estate to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations — data, history, dimensions and customizations — scoped and quoted before we build

What we build

  • Read-only extraction from AX 2012 R2/R3 into a controlled staging database, run against production or a restored copy, with row-level profiling and repeatable re-extraction
  • Dependency-sequenced load into F&O through the data management framework using standard and purpose-extended data entities, with control totals at every step
  • Financial dimension conversion from the AX 2012 dimension framework to F&O ledger dimensions, including default dimension sets and account structure validation
  • Opening balance posting through the general journal (LedgerJournalTable) per legal entity, with an automated reconciliation report against the AX trial balance
  • Open AR and AP conversion with aging preserved, settlement-ready amounts and per-customer and per-vendor control totals
  • Inventory conversion by item and InventDim combination — warehouse, location, batch and serial — reconciled to the AX inventory value report under your costing method
  • Fixed asset migration covering acquisition, accumulated depreciation and value model mapping, with a depreciation-run validation executed in the target before sign-off
  • Open sales, purchase and transfer order conversion with remaining quantities, delivery schedules, charges and confirmed dates
  • Configurable transaction history depth, loaded either into F&O or into a read-only reporting store retained for audit and customer-service lookback
  • Automated AX 2012 AOT modification scan producing a classified customization inventory: drop, replace with standard, or rebuild as an extension
  • Rebuild of retained customizations as F&O extensions using Chain of Command and event handlers, packaged as deployable models with no overlayering
  • Cutover automation on the batch framework and DMF recurring jobs, supporting repeatable timed mock runs and producing a measured cutover runbook

Sobre este Produto

Most AX 2012 estates that are still running are still running for a reason. They work. They carry fifteen years of chart-of-accounts decisions, dimension conventions, item numbering, half-forgotten AOT modifications, and a reporting pack that finance trusts. The standard upgrade path moves master data and open transactions and stops there, which is the correct engineering decision and an incomplete answer to the business question. Nobody signs off a cutover on the basis that history will be available in a decommissioned SQL server that IT promises not to switch off.

The real work of an AX 2012 to Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management migration sits in the gap: transaction history at the depth the auditors and the sales team actually need, the dimension framework translated rather than approximated, fixed assets with their accumulated depreciation intact, inventory that reconciles to the value it had the night before go-live, and an honest inventory of every X++ modification with a decision attached to each one. That gap is where cutovers slip and budgets go.

What ECOSIRE builds

A migration toolkit assembled for your estate — extraction, staging, mapping, load, reconciliation and cutover automation — plus the rebuild of the customizations you decide to keep. Built to order, quoted as a fixed scope, and handed over with the source and the mappings.

Extraction and staging

The live AX 2012 system is read, never written. Extraction runs against your AX environment or a restored copy and lands in a controlled staging database where every row can be counted, profiled and re-extracted without touching production again. Staging is the point at which data quality becomes visible: orphaned dimension values, items with no costing history, customers with no legal entity, the postings that never balanced. You see that list before the first load, not during cutover weekend.

Load into F&O

Loading runs through the data management framework using standard and extended data entities, sequenced by dependency so products exist before released products, released products before trade agreements, and masters before open documents. Each load step has its own control totals. Where an entity does not exist or does not carry a field you need, we extend it in X++ rather than working around it with direct table inserts.

Financial dimensions and the ledger

The AX 2012 dimension framework and the F&O ledger dimension model are related but not identical, and a sloppy conversion here is discovered a quarter later when a report will not tie. We map dimension attributes, values, default dimension sets and account structures explicitly, validate them against the target account structures, and load opening balances through the general journal per legal entity with a reconciliation report against the AX trial balance. Open AR and AP arrive with their aging preserved and settlement-ready amounts, with per-customer and per-vendor control totals.

Inventory, assets and open documents

On-hand is migrated by item and inventory dimension combination — warehouse, location, batch, serial — and reconciled against the AX inventory value report under your costing method. Fixed assets carry acquisition, accumulated depreciation and value model mapping, then get a depreciation-run validation in the target before anyone believes them. Open sales, purchase and transfer orders come across with remaining quantities, delivery schedules, charges and confirmed dates, so the first day in F&O is a working day rather than a re-entry exercise.

History, deliberately scoped

History is a decision, not a default. We help you set the depth: how many years of posted invoices, ledger transactions, inventory transactions and project postings go into F&O, and what goes into a read-only reporting store you retain for audit. Both options are engineered; the wrong answer is to migrate everything by reflex and slow the target, or to migrate nothing and keep an old server alive forever.

Customizations

We scan the AX 2012 AOT for modifications and produce a classified inventory: drop it because the business stopped using it, replace it because standard F&O now covers it, or rebuild it. What survives is rebuilt as F&O extensions using Chain of Command and event handlers, packaged as deployable models, with no overlayering. This is usually the most contentious part of an upgrade and the part most often estimated by guesswork; a scan with a decision against each object turns it into a backlog you can price.

Cutover you can rehearse

Every step is automated behind batch jobs and DMF recurring jobs so a full mock migration can be run end to end, timed, corrected and run again. The output is a cutover runbook with measured durations, a rollback position and a defined go/no-go checklist. Cutover windows fail when they are attempted once; they succeed when the third rehearsal is boring.

Who it is for

Organisations on AX 2012 R2 or R3, typically on-premises, with real transactional depth, multiple legal entities and a customization footprint they cannot fully describe. It fits IT and finance leadership who have been quoted an upgrade and want the gap between the standard path and their actual requirement closed with something concrete. It is not for a small, near-vanilla AX estate where the standard path plus a short data load is genuinely sufficient — we will tell you if that is your situation.

How delivery works

1. Scoping call. AX version and CU level, legal entities, module footprint, data volumes, customization count, target F&O release, history requirement, and the cutover window the business will tolerate.

2. Fixed quote. A written scope covering entities in scope, history depth, customizations classified, reconciliation reports, number of mock runs, and acceptance criteria. Priced as a fixed figure before anything is built.

3. Build. The toolkit is developed against your AX schema and your target F&O version, with a first mock run scheduled early so the numbers become real quickly.

4. Install in test, then production. Deployable packages go into your Tier-2 sandbox through your LCS and DevOps pipeline. Mock runs execute there. Production cutover happens on the runbook the rehearsals produced, with your team driving and ours alongside.

5. Support. A hypercare window follows go-live for defect fixes and reconciliation queries within the delivered scope, with the toolkit, mappings and documentation already in your possession.

What we do not claim

No instant download, no trial, no promise that a migration is a product you install. A migration is a project, and the toolkit is what makes the project repeatable and measurable rather than heroic. We make no certification or partnership claims, we do not resell anyone else's tooling, and we will not quote a duration before we have seen your data volumes and your customization inventory.

How delivery works

  1. 1

    Scoping call

A short call to confirm the workflow, your platform version and where the integration boundaries sit.

  2. 2

    Fixed quote

You receive a written scope and a fixed price. Nothing is built until you approve it.

  3. 3

    Build and test

We develop against a copy of your configuration and test it there. Typically two to four weeks.

  4. 4

    Install and support

Instalamos na sua instância, entregamos o código-fonte e incluímos duas semanas de suporte após a entrada em produção. Defeitos no código que entregamos são corrigidos gratuitamente.

O que você ganha

  • The migration toolkit itself — extraction, staging, transformation and load components — with full source delivered into a repository you own
  • A completed mapping workbook covering every entity, field, dimension attribute and code-value translation in scope
  • A reconciliation report pack per legal entity: trial balance, AR and AP aging, inventory value, fixed asset register and open document control totals
  • The classified AX 2012 customization inventory with a rebuild backlog, plus deployable packages for the extensions you chose to retain
  • Mock-run execution reports with measured durations and defect logs from each rehearsal
  • A cutover runbook with sequencing, timings, rollback position and a go/no-go checklist, plus recorded handover sessions for the technical and finance teams
  • A hypercare support window after production cutover covering defect fixes and reconciliation queries within the delivered scope

Para quem é isso

IT Director / Programme Owner

Has an upgrade business case that assumes the standard path covers the requirement, and a nagging awareness that history and customizations are unpriced. A measured toolkit with rehearsed cutover timings turns the largest unknown in the programme into a number they can defend.

Financial Controller

Will not sign off a go-live until the opening trial balance, AR and AP aging, fixed asset register and inventory value tie back to the legacy system. Automated per-legal-entity reconciliation reports produced by every mock run give them the evidence before cutover weekend rather than after it.

Solution Architect / Development Lead

Inherits an AOT full of modifications nobody documented and has to decide what survives. An automated scan with a drop, replace or rebuild classification converts an archaeology exercise into a backlog, and the retained items come back as clean, non-overlayering extensions.

Perguntas frequentes

How long does the toolkit take to build, and can I download it now?
There is nothing to download. The toolkit is built for your estate after a scoping call and a fixed quote you approve. Build lead time is typically one working week for the toolkit itself; the migration programme it supports runs longer and depends on your data volumes, history depth, customization count and how many mock runs you want before cutover. We do not quote a programme duration before seeing volumes and the customization inventory.
Which AX and Dynamics 365 versions are supported?
Source: AX 2012 R2 and R3, on-premises or hosted, at any CU level — we profile the actual schema rather than assuming a CU. Target: Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management, current release plus recent prior releases in mainstream support, deployed through LCS with Tier-2 sandbox and production tiers. This is not a Business Central migration and does not involve AL. AX 2009 and earlier are out of scope for this toolkit.
Does it migrate full transaction history?
It can, and history depth is an explicit scoping decision rather than a default. We size the volumes, show you the load and query impact, and split history between F&O and a read-only reporting store where that serves you better. Migrating everything by reflex slows the target; migrating nothing keeps a legacy server alive indefinitely. Both extremes are usually wrong.
Does this replace our implementation partner or our internal project?
No. It removes the mechanical and reconciliation burden from the project; it does not replace business process design, testing, training or change management. Your partner or internal team keeps the functional design. We supply the toolkit, the mappings, the reconciliations, the rebuilt extensions and the rehearsed cutover, and we work alongside whoever owns the programme.
How long is the cutover window and what happens if something fails?
The window is measured, not estimated. Each mock run records step-by-step durations, and the runbook is tuned until the total fits the window your business will accept — usually by moving history and non-critical loads to a pre-cutover or post-cutover pass. Every runbook includes a defined rollback position and a go/no-go checklist executed before the point of no return.
What about third-party add-ons installed in our AX 2012 environment?
They are treated exactly like your own modifications during the scan: identified, classified, and given a decision. We do not migrate or reproduce another vendor's licensed product. Where an add-on covered a business capability, we scope whether standard F&O now covers it, whether the vendor offers an F&O version you would license directly, or whether the capability should be rebuilt as an extension within our quote.
