Odoo 20 is the latest major version of Odoo, released in September 2026. The headline changes are AI agents that can create and update records and connect to your database over MCP (Model Context Protocol), an offline mode that lets users create, edit and delete records without a connection, simplified access rights that replace record rules with a domain on the access right itself, and an accounting rework in which parent accounts replace account groups. Those four are also the changes most likely to affect an upgrade.

Odoo 20 at a glance

Odoo publishes one release-notes page per version, organised by app. It runs to more than 60 sections and several hundred items, most of them localizations. This page covers the parts that change daily work or upgrade effort.

AI: agents that act, and MCP

Odoo 20 lets AI agents do much more than answer questions, and the release notes attach a cost condition to it:

• IAP credits required. In Odoo's words: "All AI features now need credits, which can be bought via IAP." Budget for it before you roll AI out to a team.
• Create and update records. You can ask an agent to create records, including from an uploaded instruction file such as a PDF, and to update existing records.
• Connect Odoo to anything. Odoo lists "Connect to your database via MCP (model context protocol)". MCP is the open protocol that AI assistants use to call external tools.
• Agentic automation. Automated and scheduled actions can summon agents, and you can review automation chats to see how an agent handled them. Agents can also update themselves for their use case.
• Working with files. You can ask questions about a file while previewing it, and upload or link documents in agent chats.
• Model choice. You pick an AI provider and Odoo "automatically uses the best AI model for the task at hand".
• Skills. What were called topics, the collections of instructions and tools that define how an agent behaves, are now called skills.
• Voice. You can dictate requests directly to an agent.
• Retention. Conversations with agents are stored for up to 30 days after the last message.

What it means in practice: MCP matters most if your team already uses an external AI assistant. Once it can reach Odoo through a standard protocol, it no longer needs a custom API bridge. Treat that as a security decision as much as a feature: decide which users and which data an agent may reach before you connect one.

Everyday use: offline, mobile, and the interface

• Offline mode. "Create, edit, archive, unarchive, and delete records while being offline," and rerun searches you ran earlier. Field teams and warehouses with poor coverage benefit most.
• Mobile. Swipe down on the dashboard to open the command palette. The date picker opens as a bottom sheet, forms are redesigned for touch, and a new login screen "supports secure authentication". You can share files from your phone into Odoo to digitize bills and expenses, or to create tasks, leads and time-off requests.
• Tax included or excluded. You can switch sales orders, purchase orders and invoices between "Tax Included" and "Tax Excluded" prices. Individual taxes can override the switch.
• Decimal separator. Users can type either a dot or a comma, whatever their localization.
• Lists and kanban. You can drag and drop several records at once. Favorited searches keep the columns you chose. Alt-click expands or collapses every group at the same level.
• Chatter and email. Emails accept CC recipients, and the chatter can be filtered to messages or tracked changes. Important messages can be pinned.
• Record deletion. When a record cannot be deleted, Odoo offers to archive it instead.
• Icons. "Font Awesome icons have been replaced by Material Symbols icons." That matters for anyone maintaining custom views.

Security and the technical layer

These are the items to read first if you run custom modules:

• Simplified access rights. Odoo states: "Access rights have been simplified by removing record rules and adding a domain directly at the access right level." Any custom module that ships record rules needs its security definitions reviewed and re-tested on 20.0.
• Mail tracking. "Tracking values have been removed; the tracking message is now generated on the fly." Features that depended on them, such as burndown charts and stage duration, were updated. Odoo notes that admins who still need tracking values "can install a dedicated module".
• Push notifications are now handled by Odoo's own push tools rather than Firebase.
• Many-to-one fields are now synced with the backend, and adding or removing values works better on large lists.
• Changes to user groups are now logged in the chatter and the console logs, and mail records state the source of their content. Both help auditing.

Accounting

The accounting section is long. These are the structural changes:

• Parent accounts. "Account groups have been replaced by parent accounts as the method of structuring charts of accounts. Account codes are now optional."
• Depreciation models. Asset models are replaced by depreciation models, and asset configuration now sits on the asset accounts themselves.
• Payment status labels. "In Process" is renamed to "Paid", and "Paid" to "Reconciled". The "Mark as Reconciled" button moves to the action menu. Check any report, filter or export that relies on the old labels.
• Employee expenses. The standalone "Employee Expenses" menu is removed. Approved expenses now create draft bills in the default expense journal.
• Bank. "All journal entries must originate from bank transactions", and statement validation is refined. There is a new bank reconciliation summary report, and one bank transaction can now be split across several accounts.
• Bills. Odoo 20 suggests bill lines from bill history and the line label. Duplicate detection is improved, with red warnings for highly likely duplicates and yellow ones to investigate. A wizard detects pending payments to prevent double payments. Bills can be paid individually or in batches "with a single signature" through the new PISP (payment initiation service provider) interface.
• Customer reminders can be sent manually or automatically, and the reminder workflow is simplified.
• Exchange differences are consolidated into a single line per invoice, which you can expand to see the calculation.

Localizations make up the largest part of the release notes. Inventory, manufacturing and purchasing

Inventory

• Min and max levels on reordering rules are now suggested from demand history, desired days of coverage and order frequency.
• A stock aging report is available from the Moves Analysis pivot view.
• Inventory at a past date has an improved date picker, down to a precise timestamp.
• Intercompany flows: one company can resupply another through routes, and sales orders can be delivered from another company's warehouse. Valuation now carries across companies.
• Landed costs can apply to individual products, and HS codes and packagings can be set per variant.
• The return wizard is removed and returns are simplified.
• CMR documents for international road transport can be downloaded prefilled from deliveries.

Manufacturing

• Continuous production: when enabled on the bill of materials, subsequent operations start as soon as some quantity is ready.
• Split an ongoing manufacturing order to produce the rest later, or reset a validated or cancelled order to draft.
• Manufacturing orders are planned as soon as possible by default, and the list order sets priority.
• The separate "Produce" and "Produce All" buttons are merged into one. The flexible-consumption setting is removed, and every order now uses flexible consumption.
• New work-order Kanban and drag-and-drop Gantt views.

Purchase

• A default Incoterm per vendor, a clearer comparison of alternative quotes, and a vendor quality rate based on quality checks.
• The expected arrival date can be edited while keeping the vendor's original date for on-time delivery calculations.

Sales, eCommerce and Point of Sale

• Sales: a dashboard above the quotation list, and order lines described without a product (a "Mandatory Product" setting can enforce one). Margins are editable and recompute the price. Pricelist rules can apply to specific periods or days of the week. Commissions can be based on the amount paid. Quotation sections can be saved as templates.
• Marketplaces: Odoo lists new Lazada and TikTok integrations that fetch orders and delivery slips and sync inventory, noted as "available from 19.0".
• eCommerce: return management and withdrawal requests, stock-based product publishing, WhatsApp abandoned-cart follow-up, a preferred delivery date, automated review requests, and cross-sell suggestions.
• Point of Sale: several currencies at checkout in one POS, multiple printers per POS, and snoozing products off the menu. Service fees can be added, and simplified receipts show subtotals and taxes without order lines. POS can now run on simplified inventory without installing the Inventory app.

New industry packages

Odoo 20 adds or overhauls ready-made industry setups. New packages include agri-equipment rental, beauty parlor, catering, community care, custom industrial equipment (EPC and turnkey projects), electronic refurbishment, interior design, machine and tool rental, mental therapy, pet groomer, physical therapy, public institution and vineyard. The property developer and hospitality packages are substantially reworked. These are starting configurations, not separate products. They speed up a new implementation; they do not replace fitting Odoo to how you actually work.

Should you move to Odoo 20 now?

The release notes tell you what changed, not whether it suits your database. Our view:

• New implementation: start on 20.0 unless a module you depend on has no 20.0 build yet. Check that first.
• On 19.0 with few customizations: run an upgraded test database now. Odoo's process is built for it.
• On 17.0: Odoo lists 17.0's standard support as ending in September 2026 (planned). Plan your upgrade now; 18, 19 and 20 are all valid targets.
• Heavily customized: porting the code is the critical path. The record-rule and tracking changes above are exactly what that porting has to catch.

Module availability decides the date. A database with custom or third-party modules cannot be upgraded until each module exists for the target version.
